Literacy Leadership, Spring 2013
Presentation of envisioned FYW curriculum to parents and students

In Literacy Leadership, we were asked to create a presentation of what we envision as a model curriculum for our area of interest in literacy instruction. The first-year writing semester curriculum I propose asks the students to rely heavily on their home and family literacy practices and to value contextualized communication with an audience. This curriculum draws both on our FYW curriculum and several ideas I have tried in my own classroom, such as the journal project.

Teaching Observation Report

Our final project in this course asked us to observe a literacy instructor in action, to assess the instructor's strengths and weaknesses in their teaching of literacy, and to offer suggestions as to how the instructor could improve their teaching. I reported that my colleague's strengths were in fostering energetic and constructive discussion among her students, but that when lecturing on specific composition issues or skills she might choose more appropriate examples or activities to better engage her students in the lesson.
